Costs We Could Do Without

In today’s world, there are many items one needs to live comfortably. Salaries barely cover living expenses and without careful planning, we would need to tighten our belts as we approach the end of the month. Costs of products on the other hand, keep escalating. How do we manage in such a scenario? Well, one way to go about it is to keep a list of all our expenses starting from the beginning of the month. Every expense could be written down in a notebook and off and on, the list could be reviewed.

We can ask ourselves the questions:

Did I REALLY need this item? Was there another similar item of a different brand costing less that I could have purchased? Did I purchase this item because I was enamored by the advertisements or could I have made do with something costing lesser than what I paid for this one? Having said this, what are the costs we CAN and SHOULD always avoid? To share an example from my experience, while reviewing my list, I realized a lot of money was going towards paying for private transport vehicles (cabs/rickshaws). If I took vehicles where I shared the ride with others, the costs came drastically down. Walking distances helped reduce costs further. Yes, it meant making changes to my lifestyle, such as waking up earlier, leaving perhaps half an hour earlier than I would have normally, but the money saved was phenomenal.

This next suggestion may not work for everyone and may not be a popular one, but it does reduce expenses.

We can keep our house clean according to our personal standards and are not held ransom by the help playing truant- which invariably happens on the very days you desperately need help. Coming to costs, the amounts charged by help (and even after that, having to settle for work of a standard that is way too undesirable) are astronomical. Another cost I have successfully avoided is what I would have incurred if I had engaged a person to walk my dogs. My husband or I walk our dogs and greatly enjoy the benefits that come with this bonding with our pets, walks in the fresh air, exercise- not to mention, the discipline it has brought into our lives!

PARKING TICKETS! 🙂 Yup. It can be a bother to find the right parking space, but think of the money and agony you can save if you park at the right place from the beginning! Imagine no towing charges, no fine levied and let’s not forget the damage caused to the vehicle in the process of being towed, cab charges to the towing yard, and so on Another cost we should try and avoid are the costs involved in last minute travel bookings. Yes, sometimes, we HAVE to travel due to some emergency and end up booking the tickets at the price of the day of travel. But, when it comes to vacations, planning in advance can help us to save a lot on tickets and hotel stays.

Watching websites and taking advantages of deals being advertised also help us cut down on expenditure. Enough cannot be said when it comes to health. Eating proper meals on time, drinking essential amounts of water, sleeping for six to eight hours a day, cutting down on sugar, alcohol, cigarettes (avoiding this last one would be ideal), taking vitamin supplements as and when necessary, helps us maintain a healthy lifestyle and we can avoid the expenses involved in visiting doctors, and the various expensive tests that follow. To conclude, there are many expenditures we can avoid if only we are more careful and think through, before actually spending. Hopefully this article has given the reader some ideas and infused a zeal to look for more costs to avoid in our daily lives!
